What does the statement |b|=7 mean? B is equal to 7. B is 7 units from 0. B is equal to -7. You cannot tell without knowing the value of b.

The answer is "b is 7 units from 0."The two straight lines around b indicate absolute value. The absolute value of a number is its distance from zero on a number line. In this case, b could equal either 7 or -7, because both are 7 units away from 0.
