What was the purpose of NATO and the Warsaw pact?
Keeping the balance of military power between the forces of NATO andthose of the Warsaw Pact, of West and East, was of great importance inkeeping international peace and stability. While the spotlight wasmainly on the two Superpowers, the United States of America and theSoviet Union, the European and Canadian forces within NATO, and allthose nations within the Warsaw Pact, are also important and cannot beignored. While the goal of Communism was to dominate and export its beliefs tothe whole world, the Soviet Union maintained a policy of controllingthe states of Eastern Europe, to act as a buffer against attack from theWest.
