The correct answer is D) Darius, as he was the Persian emperor was defeated by Athenian forces at the Battle of Marathon. The Battle of Marathon was a battle in the first Persian Invasion of Greece. They were fought primarily by Athenians against a Persian force. The Athenians had raided Ionia, a state under Persian rule and tried to overthrow the rule of the Persians who then waged the Battle of Marathon in revenge of this. This battle showed the Greeks that the Persians could be defeated.
